Charnit Sangha
Charnjit worked as a Legal Secretary first in Gravesend and then for an international law firm in London. Her work has given her an insight into how the legal system works for disputes and resolving financial issues when divorce proceedings are being pursued.
Charnjit also served as Magistrate for over 20 years and was Chairman of the Bench in Medway, Gravesend and Dartford areas. In her role, she came across many cases where the use of mediation and some ‘common sense’ might have saved in legal fees.
One of Charnjit’s strengths is her knowledge of the Sikh Community in Gravesend and the role of the extended family network in helping to resolve family disputes. But, with the rapid changes taking place within the Sikh community she recognises the valuable role that impartial and independent mediation can play in agreeing on how assets are distributed when marriages break down.
“Being a mother, grandmother and housewife, I acknowledge that marriages within the Sikh Community now break down more frequently than before. Mediation can be a less costly option worth exploring before engaging solicitors. In fact, some solicitors suggest mediation as an option to their clients.”
